Do you ever feel self-conscious when singing in fr Do you ever feel self-conscious when singing in front of your child?

Always remember that our children love to hear our voices the best, and talking, reading, and singing to them early and often is a great way to build connection, boost their brain development, and bond with them!

Another important reminder is that young children are just about the least judgmental people on the planet…so sing out loud, and sing out proud, grownups!

If you’re looking for a way to boost your confidence and learn songs, rhymes, and games for the 0-7 set, check out the “Little Music Makers Classes” link in my bio!

DIY Instruments! Do you still have a few Easter eg DIY Instruments! Do you still have a few Easter eggs laying around?

🐣 If you are an organized type of person and your Easter decorations are all neatly stored away, save this post for next year…but if you’re a little more like me (the person that kept their 🎄 up until March 🤣), read on!

For a quick and easy DIY musical instrument:

1️⃣ Grab a few empty eggs.

2️⃣ Have your child help scoop and fill the eggs - you can use rice, dried beans, quinoa, peppercorns, basically anything that will make a sound as it shakes in the egg.

3️⃣ Close the eggs and seal really well. I’d recommend colorful duct tape so your child cannot open the egg…we don’t want them to eat the dried contents, or walk around on tiny grains of rice stuck in the carpet 😉

💃🏽 Turn on some dance music and go to town shaking your new instruments!

✅ No eggs? No problem! You can do the same thing with empty plastic spice containers or pill bottles. Experimenting with different sizes of containers and fillings and comparing the sounds they make can be really fun for your older kiddos!

Save this post as a reminder of a quick and easy project for your little ones!
How can you have a music moment with your child to How can you have a music moment with your child today?

🎶 If you haven’t had time to sing or dance with your little ones yet today, no problem! There are so many opportunities left to have a musical moment today. Here are a few ideas:

🎤 If your LO is with you right now, take a minute to sing a simple song with them. Is it raining? Sing “Rain, Rain, Go Away.” Is it sunny? Sing “Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun.” Is there a birthday coming up? Practice singing “Happy Birthday.”

💿 If your child isn’t with you right now, but you’ll be riding in the car later, queue up one of their favorite songs right now so you can rock out and sing together when you pick them up!

🕺🏽Have 90 seconds for a little dance party? One of my son’s favorite songs right now is “Monster Boogie” by The Laurie Berkner Band. It is short, fun, great for stomping and dancing, and an awesome way to get the whole family involved. I’m not even kidding when I say we listened to it 27 times yesterday when he kept asking Alexa to play it on repeat. 🤣 🥳

😊 What children’s song has your family been loving lately? Let me know in the comments so we can all get some new ideas!
Struggling to teach your child an important concep Struggling to teach your child an important concept?

🥳 Use a song or rhyme, and make it fun!

👨‍🏫 Think back to your childhood - you probably learned a lot of things in song or rhyme form that are still with you as an adult. For instance, did you learn the ABC’s by just saying them, or did you learn to sing them? Did you learn the rhyme “30 Days Have September, April, June…” and still think about that when you need to remember how many days are in a month? How about the names of all 50 states?

🎵 Using a song or rhyme can make the learning process much easier, faster, and is a lot more fun than simply saying the same thing over and over in frustration!

😊 An easy way to do this is to think of a simple song you already know and replace the words. Once you have your song or rhyme, repeat it with your child as much as possible, and before you know it, they’ll be doing it with you!

💬 What is a song or rhyme that helped you learn something when you were a kid?

Add a happy bounce to your day! 🔸 If you noti Add a happy bounce to your day!

🔸 If you notice your child rocking, bouncing, tapping, clapping, etc., use that as an opportunity to play a musical game with them!

🔹 Start speaking or singing a bounce, following your child’s speed. If they speed up or slow down, you do the same. If they stop you stop, then start again when they start again.

🔸 A simple activity like this can add a lot of fun to your day, and reinforce your child’s sense of beat at the same time!

🔹 Our Little Music Makers “Waddlers and Toddlers” virtual music classes have lots of bounces and steady beat activities - check them out at the link in my bio!
Can you guess what song I’m signing? 🤟 Afte Can you guess what song I’m signing?

🤟 After some great feedback from a Little Music Makers mama who let me know her daughter loves doing the signs for our welcome song, I started including a new sign language song in every “collection” of the LMM classes.

💛 This is the song featured in the Yellow Collection we started filming this week!

🤔 Can you guess what it is? Have you ever tried using sign language with your child? Comment below to let me know!
Here’s an easy way to get your child singing! Here’s an easy way to get your child singing!

🎤 When you are singing a familiar song, one that your child has heard many times, try leaving off the last word of a phrase and see if they will fill it in for you!

🗣 They may just speak the word rather than sing it, and that is perfectly fine! Get excited and encourage them to continue by doing another phrase. In the First Steps in Music method, we like to say that “any response is the correct response” - and this helps us tailor our music making to each individual child and build their skills when they are ready. :)

📕 I love to do this with familiar books as well. Start by reading and leaving out the last word of a rhyming phrase, then try bumping it up to 2-3 words at a time as your child gets used to the game.

🥰 It is so much fun to see their joy and how they blossom as we actively involve our children in these activities!

🧐 Are you looking for more tips, tricks, and help to include music in your daily life with your little ones? Check out my Little Music Makers classes - virtual parent/child music class you can do at home…link in bio!
Jeepers Creepers…check out these Peepers! 👀 Jeepers Creepers…check out these Peepers! 👀

Meet Pinky and Sunny, eye puppets (often called Peepers) that I frequently use as props in my preschool and early elementary Little Music Makers classes!

Many of the materials I use in my classes can be used in other creative ways in your home! Here are some ideas for using these cute little peepers for music and more:

🎶 Use them to demonstrate echo and call-and-response songs.

📣 Encourage cooperation and listening by giving directions in a silly voice.

📚 Help your child develop language skills by telling stories and having conversations with your peepers.

👩‍🎨 They are a great way to foster creativity and imagination in your child!

👥 Encourage and model social interaction with them.

You can even make your own peepers by gluing large googly eyes to a pipe cleaner and bending to fit your fingers!

Give your eye puppets a name to add to the fun!

When was the last time you saw or used peepers? Are they bringing back some childhood memories for you like they do for me? 😊
Let’s play a circle game! 🌀 Circle games lik Let’s play a circle game!

🌀 Circle games like “Ring Around the Rosey” can be great fun to do with your young children! Here are a few tips for success:

1️⃣ Have your child follow you and walk in a circle, rather than holding hands. Remember holding hands with a group of children and trying to walk in a circle? That is incredibly difficult for young children, because we are asking them to walk around the circle while facing their upper bodies in, or twisting in a strange way in order to walk more comfortably. Hold off on the hand-holding until they can easily manage the walking and understand how to play the game.

2️⃣ Add fun elements when you can - falling down in “Rosey,” a train whistle for “Little Red Caboose,” tossing a scarf in “Sally Go ‘Round the Sun” as we demonstrate above, etc.

3️⃣ As with any children’s activity, repetition is key! Your child may seem uninterested at first, but the more you demonstrate with enthusiasm and encourage them to join the fun, the more interested and excited they will be!

🤔 What circle games do you remember from your childhood?

🚗 I love driving a stick shift vehicle…my favorite was our 1976 MG, until it overheated and caught fire at an outdoor wedding 😳🔥😱 (swipe for some non-fire pics)

So how about you? Do we have anything in common??

Stephen Sondheim, Into the Woods

I have no words to adequately express the sorrow and fear I am feeling tonight, but these lines from Into the Woods are ones we should all remember, whether we have little ones in our direct care or not.

Little eyes see, little ears hear, and little minds process and internalize much more than we adults realize.

Take care, friends.
Let’s get to know each other! 👋 For those wh Let’s get to know each other! 👋

For those who may be new to Beichner Music Services, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Melissa, and I’m the adoring mama of this sweet little music maker. My husband is a math teacher, so between the two of us, we have the logical and the artistic covered in our house! 🧮🎨🎭

🎹 I have been a lifelong musician, starting piano lessons when I started school, and my love for sharing music with others has grown ever since.

👩🏼‍🏫 Before becoming a work-from-home mama, I taught vocal and general music for nine years in the public school system. I stashed baby music books and materials away for YEARS in the hopes that someday I’d be able to use them.

🐣 Finally, the day came when I was able to dig into those materials with my infant son…and I quickly knew that I wanted to share my passion for early childhood music with other parents, too!

😊 I’m so glad you’re here, and would love to learn more about you. Let me know in the comments - how old is your little music maker?

2020 brought a lot of hard things, but also many g 2020 brought a lot of hard things, but also many good ones. 🎶

Here’s to hoping that 2021 is a year of good things, but also realizing that if/when they do come, we can do hard things, too. 🤨

I’m wishing you a year of music making and memories with your family. 🥳

And...our family will be eating TWO good luck meals today (and hoping they don’t cancel each other out 😂)!

Do you have any good luck traditions in your family? I’d love to hear them!
Keep watering your bamboo. 🌱 Have you heard th Keep watering your bamboo. 🌱

Have you heard the story of the Chinese Bamboo Tree? Once planted, the seeds take five years of nurturing before they break through the soil and start to show their growth. But during that time, the tree is not completely dormant…it is developing a complex root system beneath the surface, that will eventually support the rapid growth once it breaks through the surface. And by rapid growth, we’re talking nearly three feet per day to become 80 feet tall in a matter of weeks! 🤯

Our children’s development can be exactly like that bamboo tree, especially when it comes to engaging in music making activities.

Take heart, dear parent. You may not see any engagement or interest as you try new songs, rhymes, and games with your little one. It can be discouraging when you feel like something isn’t working. Continuing to provide these experiences is key, because one day (in less than five years, I promise! 😂) you will suddenly see rapid growth. 💗

Your child may suddenly start singing a simple song you’ve been singing for weeks. They may engage in a palm tickle for the first time. They may fill in the ends of phrases when you leave off the last word. They might finally tap with a steady beat.

You see, their brain was working beneath the surface all that time, processing the information you were providing and making sense of it all. Developing a complex neurological system to support their eventual show of glee and excitement when they were ready to engage in making music with you. 🤓

So, if your child isn’t responding the way you thought they would to music at home, try not to be discouraged. Just keep watering your bamboo. 🌱💦

A wiggle for your littlest music makers! 🐣

🐷If you know “This Little Piggy Went to Market,” then you are already familiar with toe and finger wiggles...and now you can add “This Little Wind” to your list! 💨

A few tips for using wiggles with your little ones:

👶 for infants, start by wiggling toes until they are no longer grabbing your hand when you try to wiggle their fingers.

👦 for toddlers, invite them to wiggle your fingers by holding out your hand and starting to speak the rhyme slowly.

🤪 always use bright, engaging facial expressions when doing these activities with your child!

I remember this moment like it was yesterday…eve I remember this moment like it was yesterday…even though it was almost 17 years ago 😳😅

🥰 I love the way that participating in music experiences makes me feel, whether that is performing a piano solo, playing hymns at church, singing in a group with others, or simply humming a tune while I make dinner.

➡️ You don’t have to be a formally trained musician to enjoy musical experiences, but it is important to have quality interactions with music as a child in order to grow into an adult who enjoys more than just listening to music in the background of daily life.

🎁 What a gift to be able to share music making with your child, and to have an idea bank of simple songs, rhymes, and games you can use at any time without any special props, equipment, or recordings.

Let’s all make some music and memories with our kids this week 😊

Do you ever feel self-conscious when singing in fr Do you ever feel self-conscious when singing in front of your child?

Always remember that our children love to hear our voices the best, and talking, reading, and singing to them early and often is a great way to build connection, boost their brain development, and bond with them!

Another important reminder is that young children are just about the least judgmental people on the planet…so sing out loud, and sing out proud, grownups!
